More than 40 locally owned stores, including several restaurants, are participating in Oklahoma City's inaugural event, with a kickoff time of 5 p.m. Stores will be open until 8 p.m., with many offering special events and refreshments.

Fashion's Night Out started last year in New York to promote fashion and the industry, and the idea created a shopping frenzy from Brooklyn to Brazil. Now Oklahoma City is on the stage, so get ready to shop and celebrate.

Here's a little of what you can expect: Free fall makeovers at The MakeUp Bar; a children's red carpet event at Uptown Kids; and informal modeling, gift with purchase and balloon pop for discounts at C/K & Co.

Participating stores include The MakeUp Bar; Gil's; The Lingerie Store; Spencer Stone; Learning Tree; CK & Co.; Ruth Meyers; Uptown Kids; Gordon Stuart; On a Whim; Gretta Sloane; Red Coyote; The Lime Leopard; Allyson's Closet; Route 66; Steven Giles; Royce Clothing; Regina's; BeBe's; French Cowgirl; KS Design; A Date With Iris; Shoe Gypsy; Covington Antique Market; Sabrina's Back Room.

And, Deep Fork Grill; The Wedge; Odelay; Republic Gastropub; Sushi Neko; Iron Starr; 42nd Street Candy Co.; Flip's; Cafe Nova; Bin 73; Keep It Local; Howell Galleries; Legacy Cleaners; Mushashi's; and Green Goodies.

A special T-shirt will be for sale, with sales benefiting The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center.

Fall fashion trends

Pantsuits, such as the ones featured in the fashion spread in this section, are a big story for fall. Here's a quick look at more trends:

Military chic. This trend reigns with full-blown pieces such as infantry-inspired jackets and coats to small details including epaulets, braiding and gold buttons.

Green, especially olive. It makes sense with all the military looks marching forward.

Fur, real and faux. Look for it on jackets, hoodies and vests, as well as shoes and boots.

Boots of all heights. Tall or short or in between, boots are all over the place for fall. Styles include motorcycle, over-the-knee, wedge and military.

Handbags and pearls. Structured handbags and ropes of pearls are the perfect complement to menswear-inspired pantsuits.

Capes, ponchos and vests. They're great for those times when a coat is just too heavy.

Gray and camel. These colors are classic together or separate.
