Tony Duquette, the fine jewelry, furniture, interiors and Hollywood set designer whose personal motto was "more is more," died in 1999. Eyeliner
The flick that kicks

Forget heavy, Cleopatra cat-eye makeup. It may be a sultry and exotic look, but right now is all about the kitten eye. Although this tamer version requires less product and skill than the cat eye, working with liquid eyeliner in any capacity can be daunting. I tapped celebrity makeup artist Kayleen McAdams,... Give peace a chance
In an era when "Angry Birds" can hardly get along, it's nice to see someone extending an olive branch _ or, even better, a chic accessory. A Peace Treaty, a brand founded by Farah Malik (a Pakistani Muslim) and Dana Arbib (a Libyan Jew), offers hand-crafted items from artisans in impoverished regions (like cashmere... Read More
Chooze, already!
Symmetry's overrated. And dressing all matchy-matchy was sweet when grandma did it (rocking those pumps that matched the cardigan that matched the clip-on earrings), but not today. So we're loving Chooze shoes' creative footwear, with a right shoe that varies in color or pattern from the left. (They also invest... Read More
A back-to-nature movement with perfumes for the more sensitive customers
Some women don't wear perfume, they say, because they are wary of chemicals in the formulas or are sensitive to synthetic scents. Many would like to have a signature scent that lingers subtly in a room even after they've left, but they cannot stomach the potential headache. Fortunately, several companies make... Read More
For preteen girls, a new product — scented shoelaces
MELVILLE, N.Y. — For Apparel Dynasty, a Bohemia, N.Y., clothing company, when it comes to sneakers, makeup bags, wallets — or scented shoelaces — the watchwords are, in co-owner Stacey Grieco's words, "cute and affordable." "We have been in business for about a year, actually debuting our line at last... Read More

Lace provides elegant details

In the spring of 1939, Coco Chanel said this about lace: "I consider lace to be one of the prettiest imitations ever made of the fantasy of nature; lace always evokes for me those incomparable designs which the branches and leaves of trees embroider across the sky, and I do not think that any invention of the human spirit could have a more graceful or precise origin."

NEW YORK — A chance to kiss the buff, shirtless Richard Gere of the early '80s? Sold, for $20,000!

It wasn't exactly a time machine that was auctioned off at the annual amfAR AIDS charity gala kicking off New York Fashion Week on Wednesday evening. Rather, it was a black-and-white portrait of Gere by famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who himself died of AIDS in 1989. Displaying the photo from the stage, cookbook author and TV personality Padma Lakshmi kissed it a few times to demonstrate its appeal.

The gala, held in the cavernous event space at Cipriani Wall Street, is a staple event on the fringes of New York Fashion Week.
