— A Spanish teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a Putnam City High School student has been arrested on rape complaints, authorities said Tuesday.

Lisa Kays

Lisa Kays, 46, of Yukon, was arrested Monday on three complaints of rape and two complaints of forcible oral sodomy. Officials allege Kays had a relationship with a 17-year-old male student.

Kays has been a teacher at the school since 2002, officials said, and served as the school sponsor of the SALSA Club, a Spanish-Latin club.

She was booked into the Oklahoma County jail Monday and released later that day after posting bail. Putnam City Schools Police Chief Mark Stout said he expects charges to be filed this week.

Spouse seeks divorce

Court records show Kays' husband, Skyler Kays, filed for divorce Jan. 20. The two married in September 1985 and have two grown children, records state.

The allegation against Lisa Kays surfaced Feb. 7 through an email service people can use to report crimes and safety concerns anonymously to Putnam City campus police, Stout said.

The teacher was removed from the school Thursday and remains on paid leave, Superintendent Paul Hurst said at a news conference Tuesday at the district administration building.

“The relationship would be contrary to all the values of the teaching profession,” Hurst said.

Administrators and police talked with parents of the male student by phone Friday and met with them Monday morning. The alleged victim, a junior, is continuing to attend the school, Hurst said.

Asked if there may be more victims, Stout said police are continuing their investigation.

When interviewed by school officials Feb. 9, the alleged victim denied that he had had a sexual relationship with the Spanish teacher, according to a police report. He said he was “very close” with his teacher and had been for several years. He gave officials the names of other students who had a close relationship with Kays, the report states.

School officials interviewed other students who said the alleged victim was having an inappropriate relationship with Kays.

5 sexual encounters

On Feb. 10, the alleged victim changed his story and described five sexual encounters — three of the encounters occurred in Kays' classroom after school, Stout said.

The other two encounters were in a vehicle, once outside of the victim's home in Kays' car and a second time in the parking garage of Deaconess Hospital, according to the report. The student said the encounters occurred between September and January.

The two had sex three times, and Kays performed oral sex on him, he told school officials.
