Resolution beauty: Experts give advice for a gorgeous 2013
By Linda Miller | Published: January 7, 2013
Let's be honest. Most of us let our beauty routines slide once in a while, even though we know it's not good to skip sunscreen or to slip off to bed without removing makeup.

And who among us hasn't gotten stuck in a rut with lip colors, makeup techniques and hairstyle, and before long, years have gone by without so much as a single change in makeup or hair?
The start of a new year is a good time to resolve to do better in many aspects of our lives, even with something as simple as makeup and hair.
We asked those who know about skin care, makeup and hair what resolutions they would like to see women make and keep as we dive into 2013.
Elizabeth Farris, cosmetics manager at Cayman's in Norman:
Make skin care a priority.
Never sleep in your makeup.
Choose a beauty routine that you can be consistent with, and be consistent. It's more important to use a good moisturizer and use it daily than to splurge on a great moisturizer and use it occasionally.
Strive for pretty skin so you can use less foundation.
Make seasonal changes with new eye shadow shades and lip colors for a fresh, modern look. Embrace one of spring's new pastels for an easy update.
Check out new colors and application techniques at local cosmetics counters.
Think of makeup as fashion and welcome change. You're not wearing the same top you wore five years ago. Why should your makeup be the same?
Steve Schardein, Schardein & Co.:
Use more professional hair care products, as well as deep conditioning treatments to repair damaged hair and to help keep it in tiptop shape.
Embrace the idea of less blond, less bleach and play up more natural tones. Women in London, Switzerland and Amsterdam are giving a nod to natural brown hues with subtle highlights, and their hair is reaping the benefits.
Shampoo every other day and check out products that can revitalize second-day hair.
Don't be afraid to try a new style. Go to a salon and stylist that offers consultations, listens to your needs and wants, asks questions about your lifestyle and how much time you want to spend on your hair, and then can create a style you love.
Lilly Stone and Natasha Shipley, Sooo Lilly Cosmetics:
Sort through your makeup, skin care and hair products regularly. Toss anything that's old or smells.
Get organized. Put makeup and cosmetics that you use daily in an acrylic organizer or get creative with bins, cups or plates. Home Depot and Lowe's sell canvas tool buckets with pockets that can hold all your lotions, potions and brushes. Store it under the sink and pull it out each morning.
Keep cosmetic brushes clean. Use either a brush cleaner or a gentle detergent, and lay brushes flat to dry.
Cleanse skin every night before bed, whether you wear makeup or not. Use a gel cleanser for oily skin and a lotion or cream for dry skin.
Exfoliate two to three times a week to remove dead skin cells and allow moisturizer to better penetrate for soft and smooth skin.
Use a moisturizer or foundation with an SPF 15 or higher during the day to protect skin from damaging rays of the sun.
At night, use a moisturizer with peptides, a good anti-aging ingredient.
Moisturize hands and neck, which are often neglected.
Treat eye area with special care. Skin is thinner there. Use a gentle eye makeup remover, and hydrate area with an eye cream.
