Statement jewelry a sophisticated summer staple

Sometimes big is better and it definitely can be more fun, especially when it comes to jewelry.
Large necklaces, bold cuffs and rings the size of quarters are as popular this summer as dainty chains and thin bangles. And if you think bib necklaces and wide cuffs are too hot and heavy during an Oklahoma summer, you probably haven't picked up one of these jewels. Most of them are lightweight and just begging to be worn.
“It's about making a statement,” said Eddi Morgan, accessories buyer for Balliets at Classen Curve.
A large necklace or cuff is sometimes all that's needed to take a dress from simple to simply stunning. “Put on a statement necklace and you get so many compliments,” Morgan said.
“I'm selling more of them too, especially to young people. My next mission in New York City is to look for a new range of statement jewelry.”
What's fun about big jewelry is that it can make even more impact when layered, but too much can also take away from the piece you want to show off. The other accessory needed to pull off some of these looks? Attitude.
“If you're tall and have a lot of attitude, wear it all,” Morgan said.
For those who are timid about large jewelry, start with one dramatic piece. Then as you get more comfortable, go bigger or pile on another layer.
“Just have fun with it,” she said. “You're going to make a lot of new friends because people will come up and talk to you about your jewelry.”
Many of summer's offerings are bold in color as well as size. Green, coral and royal blue command attention. Gold mixed with ivory or black screams sophistication. Real gemstones add another level of sophistication and luxury.
Pieces are available in all price ranges, from about $40 to several hundred dollars so there's something for those who want to spend a little or a lot. When you're shopping, keep in mind that the look continues into fall.
“Dramatic statement jewelry is a major trend this season and serves as a way to update a wardrobe and make a lasting impression,” said Melissa Merriman, regional communications director for Dillard's
She said shorter or bib necklaces usually have a lot of detail and can easily go from day to night or from work to play. “This statement necklace style can be found dripping with pearls and rhinestones for elegant looks or with colorful details for a more playful take.”
Powerful oversized earrings are also great statement makers, she said, so show them off with your hair pulled back in a low ponytail or tucked behind your ears.
Cocktail rings and cuff bracelets also pack a dramatic punch. “A cuff and cocktail ring might be overpowering if worn together, but a pair of oversized earrings and that same cuff could look great. When accessorizing, take a step back and see where your focus lies. You will know if you're wearing too much.”
“The key to wearing statement pieces is to wear them with confidence,” she said.
