All right, let's get this out of the way. Yes, Rice-a-Roni is from San Francisco. Yes, it's a combination of rice and broken vermicelli with a pouch of some high-sodium flavoring. Yes, it's one of my wife's favorite things to eat. No, I won't be having any for the Super Bowl, but whom am I to tell you no.
But I will tell you, San Francisco is one of our most celebrated food towns. For the Super Bowl, I recommend a combination of two of the city's best known recipes: the Crab Louie salad and Green Goddess dressing. Out in the Bay Area, if folks aren't eating a Crab Louie during the game, it might be a big bowl of Cioppino with the aforementioned sourdough bread. Or they might make a giant casserole of Chicken Tetrazzini, which also hails from the city by the bay.
For libations, there is a good chance they will be sipping Martinis, which has a cloudy history — surprise, surprise — but The Occidental Hotel in San Francisco has a claim on the origin based on a cocktail it served in the 1860s called The Martinez.
